Loss of power and How to Fix it

In this video, we show you how to troubleshoot and restore power if your home loses electricity.

What to do if your power goes out

Steps to Take When You Lose Power

Step 1: Check Your Neighbourhood and Electricity Meter

  • Start by checking if your neighbours have power.
  • Check your electricity meter to see if any indicator lights are on or if the meter is spinning.
  • If your neighbours are also without power, or if your meter has no lights or is not spinning, it could be a network fault. In this case, contact ENERGEX directly at 13 62 62 to report the issue.

Step 2: Inspect Your Switchboard

  • If your neighbours still have power, the issue could be within your property.
  • Locate your switchboard:
    • For houses, it’s typically found in the garage or on an external wall.
    • For units, it’s often in a cupboard in the kitchen or hallway.
  • Look for a safety switch or circuit breaker in the OFF position (toggle down and opposite the others on the board, as shown in the picture below).
  • Reset it by flicking the switch back to the ON position.

Step 3: Perform RCD Testing

  • If the switch won’t turn on or stay on:
    1. Unplug ALL appliances, including hidden ones like the fridge, dishwasher, or outdoor water pump.
    2. Reset the Safety Switch.
    3. If the switch stays on, plug appliances back in one at a time.
    4. If the Safety Switch trips when a specific appliance is plugged in, that appliance is likely the cause. Leave it unplugged and restore power to the rest of your property.

  • If the Safety Switch still won’t turn on or stay on, contact Jentech Electrical—the fault may be in the wiring.

Step 4: Check the Community Switchboard (for units)

  • If all Safety Switches are in the ON position but there’s still no power:
    • Locate your community switchboard.
    • Find your unit’s main switch (marked for your unit).
    • If it’s in the OFF position, reset it by flicking it back upwards.

Step 5: Call Jentech Electrical

  • If the issue persists, contact Jentech Electrical at 07 3914 9696. We can arrange for a technician to attend and resolve the problem.
