Ferny Grove is about twelve kilometres north-west of the Brisbane CBD, with Ferny Hills immediately alongside it. Both are comfortably inside the area we cover from the Yeerongpilly workshop — a point worth stating plainly, because the distance reads further than it is and people in these suburbs regularly assume an inner-Brisbane electrician won't come out.

The blocks here are larger than the inner north, and that changes the work. Detached sheds, studios, granny flats, pools, and pumps all need sub-mains run to them and, often, their own small distribution board. Getting the cable size and protection right over that distance is the difference between a shed that works and a shed that trips every time the compressor starts.

The other factor is the bushland interface. Backing onto Bunyaville and the D'Aguilar foothills means mature trees over overhead services and a genuine storm-damage season. We deal with the consequences most summers — torn service lines, water in boards, and homes off supply until an electrician certifies the installation for Energex reconnection.

We get asked this a lot by people in these suburbs, usually because our suburb pages skew inner-south — those pages reflect where we have the most published project history, not the limit of where we work. If you're at the outer edge of the radius we'll be upfront about any travel time priced into the quote.
What does a switchboard upgrade and relocation cost?
Two separate things, and worth separating in any quote you receive. A straight board swap — Energex isolates, we replace the board, they reconnect — typically falls in the $1,800 – $3,500 range. Relocating the meter itself, whether that's an external position change, a 3-phase upgrade, or an underground conversion, adds roughly $2,500 – $6,000 including Energex connection fees, permit applications, and usually two site visits. Combined, an upgrade plus relocation legitimately lands in the mid four figures to around $9,500 depending on scope. Those are indicative Brisbane market ranges rather than our rate card — we quote fixed-price after a site visit.
I've been quoted a lot more than that. Is the quote wrong?
Not necessarily. Upgrade plus relocation is genuinely one of the more expensive residential electrical jobs, and the range above assumes reasonably standard conditions. Long cable runs, trenching, asbestos-affected sheeting, an underground conversion, or a difficult Energex connection all push it up legitimately. What a quote should do is separate the board work from the relocation work from the Energex fees, so you can see what you're paying for. If it's a single number with no breakdown, ask for one before you compare it to anything.
How do I get power to a shed at the back of the block?
With a properly sized sub-main, not an extension lead or an undersized cable. The size depends on the run length and the load — a shed with a welder or a compressor is a different calculation to one with lights and a couple of outlets. Over thirty or forty metres, voltage drop drives the cable size as much as the current does. Most sheds this size warrant a small distribution board at the structure with its own protection.
A storm took my service line down. What happens now?
Energex is responsible for the network side, but the point of attachment and everything from there into the house is the property owner's. If the attachment or the consumer mains are damaged, an electrician has to repair and certify that work before Energex will reconnect. We do this work through storm season and we'll tell you honestly on the phone whether it's an Energex job or ours.
My house is from the 1980s. Surely the wiring is still fine?
It's usually working, which isn't the same thing. By this age the insulation in the roof space is often brittle, the board predates RCD requirements on all circuits, and there's no spare capacity for an air conditioner or an EV charger. We'd rather inspect and tell you it has years left than have you replace something that doesn't need it — but on a 1980s original installation, the honest answer is more often that it's due.
